Shoremen Open 2016 Campaign with 2-0 Win at Neumann

ASTON, Pa. — Senior forward Brian Wilkinson (Sykesville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) was involved in both goals as the visiting Washington College men’s soccer team blanked host Neumann, 2-0, this afternoon in the season opener for both teams.

How It Happened
– The Shoremen found the back of the net just 3:12 into the game as Skyler Clark scored on a rebound of an initial shot by Wilkinson.
– Wilkinson then scored a penalty-kick goal exactly four minutes later to give the Shoremen a 2-0 edge.
– The Shoremen held a 13-3 advantage in shots in the first half, putting 11 of them on goal.
– Each team had six shots in the second half, but neither found the back of the net. Josh Samuels saved the last shot of the game, off the foot of Neumann’s Billy Swontek in the 87th minute.

For the Shoremen (1-0)
– Scorers: Wilkinson (1 goal, 1 assist), Clark (1 goal)
– Goalkeeper: Samuels (5 saves, 0 goals allowed, 90:00)
– The Shoremen finished with 19 shots in the game, 14 of them on goal. Washington recorded six of the game’s seven corner kicks.

For Neumann (0-1)
– Scorers: none
– Goalkeeper: Shane Smith (9 saves, 2 goals allowed, 45:00), Dan Jones (3 saves, 0 goals allowed, 45:00)
– Neumann had nine shots in the game, five of them on goal.

– This is the seventh year in a row the Shoremen have won their season opener. Head coach Roy Dunshee is a perfect 5-0 in season openers during his five-year tenure.
– Samuels played his 12th career full game in goal for the Shoremen this afternoon. It was the 11th time he allowed either zero or one goal.
